Since 2016, MEMORY! has developed expertise in supporting independent filmmakers in Myanmar with a selective program – Myanmar Script Fund – that has continued uninterrupted even during the challenges of the pandemic and the 2021 coup.
Today, independent filmmakers are at risk of arrest by the junta because they represent the essence of freedom of expression. Yet they courageously continue to produce films as an act of resistance.
Since 2021, the program has broadened its scope: it deals with both feature and short films, fiction and documentary. It is now called Myanmar Film Fund and acts at the production, post-production and distribution stages.
The project responds to the multiple constraints faced by filmmakers in Myanmar (limited access to dedicated professional training or higher education, poor access to funding, limited access to international film industry professionals etc.).
It acts as an incubator for film projects throughout the year, uniquely combining tailored mentoring over time with direct financial support through regular calls for projects.
Myanmar Film Fund also acts as a program to promote human rights and in particular freedom of expression.
